Wilfried – Live – Nachts In Der City
Born in Goisern, Upper Austria, in 1950, Wilfried, whose real name is Wilfried Scheutz, founded his first beat band, The Provos, in 1964. Five years later, he left the tranquil province and moved to Graz to begin his studies. At the same time, he worked on his musical career, playing bass and guitar in several bands and singing on the last single “Song/Mexican Desert” by the Graz hard rock band Hide & Seek in 1972. A year later, Wilfried had his first No. 1 hit in the Austrian charts with his English-language debut single “Mary, Oh Mary.” With “Ziwui, ziwui,” he temporarily switched to singing in dialect and established himself as an early representative of Austropop. His rock interpretation of the “Kufsteinlied” from 1981 can be considered an early example of “new folk music.” From 1978 to mid-1979, he was the singer of Austrian pop rock band Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung (EAV). He can be heard on their debut album and also toured with the band.
Musically, the album was clearly influenced by rock cabaret. Since the EAV did not have its own record deal at the time, it was released on Wilfried’s record deal with EMI. Only 2,000 copies were released. It was not until 2015 that it was re-released on CD, followed a year later by a remastered version on vinyl. The original 1978 version is a sought-after rarity among collectors.
After releasing two English-language albums with EMI, Wilfried moved to Polydor in 1981 and from then on only recorded German-language albums. He represented Austria with “Lisa Mona Lisa” at the Eurovision Song Contest and enjoyed repeated success as an actor in theater and film. In 1990, he released the live album “Nachts in der City.” This album has now been reissued with a revised version of “Adler Bluusz,” which is almost 12 minutes long. The liner notes were written by Austrian film producer and director Rudi Dolezal, who was a close friend of the artist during his lifetime. Wilfried died in the summer of 2017.
