On August 29, 1981, Southern rockers 38 Special entered the stage of the open-air theater high above the Rhine on Loreley Rock. The Outlaws, Nine Below Zero and Thin Lizzy were in the festival line-up that day as well. It was the first of the many great outdoor festival-events of the WDR Rockpalast in this unique natural ambience in St. Goarshausen. 38 Special delivered an excellent, energetic show, all their energy was balled up in an explosive presentation, the lineup of that time with Donnie Van Zant, Don Barnes, Steve Brookins, Jeff Carlisi and Larry Junstrom were at the peak of their powers. Vocals and sound were top-notch. Anyone watching the DVD will immediately notice that 38 Special had as much fun as the audience. Don Barnes remembers: “The crowd was pumped up with the energy that would dominate the day. We walked out to thunderous cheers and felt like gladiators marching into the arena.”
